Endpoint Security: NGFW Product Classification

A datasheet from NSS Labs titled Next Generation Firewall

A firewall is a mechanism used to protect a trusted network from an untrusted network while allowing authorized communications to pass from one side to the other. Though traditional firewalls have long been in use, they have been forced to evolve as new web applications and security threats emerge. These next generation firewalls (NGFWs) have traditionally been deployed to defend the network perimeter, but enterprises have begun to expand deployment to also include internal segmentation. NGFWs are deployed at critical points in the network, which makes their stability and reliability paramount. Regardless of any new capabilities that an NGFW may have, it must be as stable, as reliable, as fast, and as flexible as the firewall that it is replacing
