It has been more than three years since NSS performed a comparative test of enterprise endpoint protection (EPP) products for protection against socially engineered malware (SEM). In 2010, one of the products tested caught as much as 90% of the SEM on download and the top combined score for download and execution blocking was 95.2%. In this comparative of EPP products for protection against SEM, the focus is on the products’ security effectiveness for protection at download. The minimum score in this test was 98%. SEM block-on-execute capabilities were not ignored but were tested only once per week. Even with this weekly combination of protection scores, the combined protection rate of all products exceeded 99%. With no product significantly out-performing another with respect to protection against SEM, enterprises should favor the ability of EPP products to protect against exploits and phishing attacks.
