Radware DefensePro 8412 Q3 2010

In Q2 of 2010, NSS Labs Recommend RatingNSS Labs performed thorough testing of the Radware DefensePro 8412 against our Attack Mitigator v2.0 testing methodology. Although the DefensePro also includes IPS functionality, this test was focused exclusively on the attack mitigation capabilities of the DefensePro. This report summarizes the results from the tests performed at the NSS Labs facility.

Whereas network intrusion prevention systems (NIPS) are designed to block exploits against vulnerable applications, an attack mitigator is a type of NIPS device that specializes in defence against denial of service attacks. While exploits seek to gain access to systems, denial of service attacks seek to crash or render target systems inaccessible by consuming the target’s resources. Such attacks have been used against high-value nation-state targets, military, critical infrastructure, e-commerce and communications systems. The goal of an attack mitigator is to filter out the malicious denial of service traffic, while allowing the legitimate traffic to pass.

Report Overview

DefensePro 8412 is Radware’s flagship product offering, rated at 8Gbps and offers good performance coupled with low latency under all normal and extreme traffic conditions. This is achieved via OnDemand switch architecture and the ASIC-based DoS Mitigation Engine. We found DefensePro’s detection and mitigation capabilities to be effective and reliable in protecting networks under attack, and the device handled our extensive reliability tests with ease while remaining stable.

The security effectiveness of the device for the tests performed was impressive. The DefensePro includes a wide range of innovative attack mitigation technologies that use real-time signatures to detect and mitigate attacks such as: brute force attacks, denial of service, distributed denial of service, application flooding and application and network scanning.
