From a penetration testing perspective, the NSS Labs reports are useful in determining not only how robust a client's endpoint protection is, but what the probability of existing infections are for their workstations. A company using a product on the weaker end of the scale is likely to have a higher chance of botnet agents and credential sniffers.

The results from the NSS Labs corporate endpoint security tests are astounding. The testing methodology is clean and the process fair; giving all vendors the unique opportunity to review the procedures ahead of time and provide feedback or modify their configurations for optimal results. Of the 10 tested products, the top three in the NSS Labs Recommend group are not so surprising. What's going to shock most enterprise consumers are those in the bottom with Caution ratings. Three of the four bad performers are brands regularly used to protect some of the largest enterprises.

With its new approach to testing anti-virus products, NSS Labs is providing two key metrics in addition to traditional threat detection rates: (1) measurement of detection and blocking of threats based on their URL source and (2) measurement of the time delay between when a security vendor is first aware of a potential new threat and when protection from that threat is available at customer endpoints--the so-called 'time-to-protect'. You can't just go grab any old anti-virus product off the shelf and get the same level of protection...the other interesting note, to me anyway, is the disparity in results between the NSS Labs testing and the certification from ICSA Labs. If one were to compare solutions that were ICSA Labs Certified, then one would think that all of the above solutions were equal. However, the NSS Labs testing clearly shows that this is simply not true.
