NSS Labs: Match Security Software to Use Cases

Antivirus vendors actually pay to have their products tested and certified by most of the big testing labs. In return some of the labs help vendors achieve certification by providing details on any failures. That's not the case with NSS Labs. Tests by NSS Labs are sponsored (and bankrolled) by large companies looking to make the best choices for their own security. Security vendors aren't the customers for this lab. They can't opt out of a test if they don't like the results.

Vikram Phatak, CTO of NSS Labs, presented a technical paper based on recent research at the 6th International Conference on Malicious and Unwanted Software (Malware 2011 for short) last week. This yearly conference is sponsored by Trend Micro, the IEEE Computer Society, and WSSRL (Wireless System Security Research Laboratory). Its purpose is to let experts from academia, government, and the security industry share the latest advances in malware research.
